The senior women’s national football team of Ghana, known as the Ghana Black Queens, has officially qualified for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and will head into the tournament as one of the top-seeded teams on the continent.

The competition, originally scheduled for March 2026, has been rescheduled and will now take place from July 25 to August 16, 2026, in Morocco. The tournament is expected to bring together Africa’s strongest women’s national teams in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive championship.

Ghana secured a top-seeded position following a notable rise in the continental rankings, moving from sixth to third in Africa. The improved standing reflects the team’s recent performances and consistent development in women’s football across the country.

In the group stage draw, Ghana has been placed in Group D alongside the Cameroon women’s national football team, the Mali women’s national football team, and the Cape Verde women’s national football team. The group is expected to provide tough competition, particularly against Cameroon and Mali, both of which have strong histories in African women’s football.

The Black Queens head into the tournament with growing confidence following their recent success at the 2026 Pink Ladies Cup. In that tournament, Ghana finished as champions after an unbeaten run that included matches against teams such as the Hong Kong women’s national football team and the Russia women’s national football team.

Beyond continental glory, the tournament carries additional significance because it will serve as the main qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled to take place in Brazil. The top four teams at the 2026 WAFCON will automatically qualify for the global tournament.

Ghana’s group stage campaign is scheduled to begin on July 25, 2026, with a match against Cape Verde. Additional fixtures will see Ghana face Cameroon and Mali later in the group stage, with final match dates expected to be confirmed by tournament organizers.

Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren and Ghanaian football officials have expressed strong confidence in the squad’s chances of making a deep run in the competition. The Black Queens have historically been one of the most consistent teams in African women’s football, reaching the semifinals of the tournament eight times.

Despite those strong performances over the years, the team has yet to secure its first WAFCON title. With improved rankings, recent tournament success, and a talented squad, the Black Queens are aiming to finally capture their maiden continental crown when the tournament kicks off in Morocco later this year.
