Karpowership Ghana has introduced several initiatives aimed at reducing the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in Ghana, where women currently make up only about 25 percent of the workforce in technical and engineering-related occupations.
One of the major steps taken by the company is its partnership with the Women in Energy Network Africa under a program supported by the World Bank. The collaboration, launched in 2024, focuses on increasing female participation in the energy sector by offering scholarships, career counseling, and vocational training opportunities for female students.
Karpowership Ghana has also introduced an all-female internship programme designed for students studying mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering. The programme provides hands-on industry experience as well as financial support to help participants build practical skills in their fields.
Another initiative, known as the “Girl Power” programme, focuses on mentoring young girls and encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM while challenging traditional gender stereotypes that often discourage female participation in technical professions.
The company also runs educational outreach activities that include field trips to its powership facilities. These visits allow students to see real-world electricity generation operations and gain a better understanding of careers in the power and energy sector.
In addition, mentorship sessions organized by Karpowership Ghana feature successful women working in STEM who share their experiences and inspire students to build confidence and pursue technical careers.
Globally, women still face significant challenges in STEM fields. Women hold only about 28 percent of STEM jobs worldwide, and although they account for around 40 percent of STEM undergraduate students, fewer than 20 percent reach senior leadership positions. Experts say barriers such as limited research funding, gender stereotypes, and discriminatory workplace practices continue to affect women’s advancement in the sector.
