Ghanaian youngster Clinton Edem Wilson has signed his first professional contract with German champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen, marking a major milestone in the promising winger’s career.
The 18-year-old, who was born in Accra, returns to Leverkusen after an impressive spell with FC Schalke 04, where his performances at youth level earned him a professional opportunity with the Bundesliga champions.
From Ghana to Germany
Wilson’s football journey began in Ghana, where he developed his talent with Nima City FC and Pro Players Football Academy. His early performances also earned him selection for Ghana’s Under-15 national team, highlighting his potential from a young age.
After relocating to Germany in early 2023, Wilson joined FC Eichsfeld, where he quickly attracted attention with his pace and attacking ability. His performances led to a move to Bayer Leverkusen’s youth academy for a six-month development spell in early 2024.
Seeking regular competitive football, the winger joined Schalke ahead of the 2024/25 season, a move that proved crucial to his development.
Standout Season at Schalke
Wilson enjoyed an impressive campaign with Schalke’s Under-19 side in the DFB Youth League, making 24 appearances while contributing six goals and two assists.
His pace, dribbling ability, and attacking creativity caught the attention of Bayer Leverkusen, prompting the club to bring him back and reward him with his first professional contract.
Set to Strengthen Leverkusen’s U19 Squad
Wilson will initially rejoin Bayer Leverkusen’s Under-19 team as he continues his development within one of Germany’s most respected youth systems.
The club believes the Ghanaian winger possesses the qualities needed to make a significant impact in their attacking setup.
Leverkusen’s Director of Football, Kim Falkenberg, praised the teenager after the signing.
“Clinton Wilson is a player who is very difficult to stop. He’s quick, agile and good at finding solutions in one-on-one situations. He will breathe new life into our U19s attack.”
One of Ghana’s Brightest Young Prospects
Performance data further underlines Wilson’s potential. During his youth campaign, he averaged 4.23 successful take-ons and 3.70 shots per 90 minutes, demonstrating his ability to consistently challenge defenders and create scoring opportunities.
With his first professional contract now secured, Wilson becomes the latest Ghanaian talent to progress through the German football system. His return to Bayer Leverkusen represents another important step in what many hope will be a successful professional career for one of Ghana’s emerging football prospects.
