Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Desmond De-Graft Paitoo, faced public anger during a National Sanitation Day exercise after residents of Gomoa Nyanyano heckled and hooted at him over the deteriorating condition of the Kasoa-Nyanyano road.
The confrontation highlighted growing frustration among residents who say the prolonged delays in completing the road project have made daily travel increasingly difficult.
Tensions Flare During Clean-Up Exercise
The incident occurred while the MP participated in a community clean-up campaign as part of the National Sanitation Day activities.
As he interacted with residents, some members of the community openly expressed their dissatisfaction, chanting and heckling the lawmaker over what they described as the government’s failure to complete the long-awaited road project.
The protest drew attention from other participants, with several residents using the occasion to demand immediate action.
Residents Cite Poor Road Conditions
The primary concern raised by residents is the poor condition of the Kasoa-Nyanyano road, a major transport corridor serving thousands of commuters in the Central Region.
Motorists and residents say sections of the approximately 15 to 20-kilometre stretch have become difficult to use due to deep potholes, muddy surfaces during the rainy season, and prolonged construction delays.
Although portions of the project have seen intermittent work, construction has reportedly stalled on several occasions, with contractors citing funding challenges and equipment-related issues.
Many commuters argue that the situation has disrupted transportation, increased travel times, and affected businesses operating along the route.
MP Describes Incident as Politically Motivated
Reacting to the incident, Desmond De-Graft Paitoo rejected suggestions that the backlash reflected widespread public dissatisfaction, describing the confrontation as politically orchestrated.
According to the MP, the disruption was allegedly instigated by an opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency official popularly known as “Sly.”
He further claimed that the individual encouraged the crowd’s actions and recorded the incident with the intention of using the footage for political purposes.
Long-Standing Road Project Remains a Major Concern
The Kasoa-Nyanyano road has been the subject of repeated calls for completion due to its importance as one of the busiest road networks in the area.
While temporary maintenance works were undertaken earlier this year following appeals in Parliament, residents continue to demand a permanent solution, arguing that the pace of construction has been too slow.
The delays have fueled criticism from sections of the community, with some residents accusing the two-term MP of not doing enough to push for the project’s completion through the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
As concerns over the road continue to mount, residents are calling on the government and relevant authorities to accelerate construction and deliver a lasting solution to improve transportation and economic activity in the area.
