The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has appealed for urgent assistance after flooding displaced more than 3,000 residents and damaged or submerged over 400 homes in the municipality.
The disaster followed a nine-hour downpour on Sunday night, September 27, 2026, which caused the River Dayi to overflow its banks. A local bridge also collapsed, while floodwaters made several roads impassable.
Hohoe Zongo was among the worst-affected communities, with reports indicating that more than half of the area was submerged. Galikorfe and sections stretching from Kiki’s to the Atabu Junction also suffered extensive flooding.
Displaced families have sought refuge in school classrooms and other temporary shelters as authorities assess the damage and organize assistance.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Tsekpo expressed sympathy for affected residents and urged them to remain calm and cooperate with emergency response teams.
He said food and other immediate relief items were being distributed to the hardest-hit households, but stressed that the scale of the disaster exceeded the resources available locally.
The MP called on the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the central government, businesses and charitable organizations to provide emergency supplies, medical assistance and blankets for displaced families.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive, physical planning officers and NADMO engineers are conducting assessments across the affected communities.
Their work includes examining damaged structures and documenting losses to homes and livelihoods to guide further relief efforts. The assessments are also expected to inform drainage interventions aimed at reducing the risk of similar flooding in the future.
