A mobile money vendor fatally shot an alleged armed robbery suspect during a violent confrontation in Lashibi, Accra, on Friday, July 3, 2026, leading to the full recovery of GH¢140,000 that had been stolen during the attack.
The Accra Regional Police Command confirmed that the vendor escaped the incident without injuries, while a second suspect fled the scene and is currently being pursued by police.
Armed Ambush on Vendor
According to police, the vendor was driving home after work with a bag containing GH¢140,000 when he was intercepted by two armed men riding a motorcycle.
The suspects reportedly launched an attack by opening fire on the vendor’s vehicle, shattering the front windscreen and puncturing the right rear tyre in an apparent attempt to force him to stop.
Police said the assailants succeeded in taking the bag containing the cash before attempting to flee the area on the motorcycle.
Vendor Returns Fire
Investigators say the vendor subsequently drew a firearm and returned fire as the suspects attempted to escape.
One of the alleged robbers was struck during the exchange and died at the scene.
The second suspect reportedly abandoned the motorcycle and the stolen cash before fleeing on foot.
Authorities have not announced whether the vendor will face any charges, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing.

Police confirmed that the entire GH¢140,000 taken during the robbery was recovered intact.
The crime scene investigation also led to the retrieval of:
- An AK-47 assault rifle.
- Two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunition.

The recovered firearm and ammunition have been taken into police custody for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police Launch Manhunt
The Accra Regional Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for the second suspect, who remains at large.
According to a public safety brief signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, intelligence teams have been deployed across the Greater Accra Region to track down the fugitive and bring him to justice.
Police have urged members of the public with information that could assist the investigation to report it through the nearest police station or emergency contact numbers.
Public Urged to Remain Vigilant
The latest incident highlights the continuing security challenges faced by mobile money operators, who are frequently targeted by armed criminals because of the large sums of cash they handle.
The Police Command has advised mobile money vendors and other cash-intensive businesses to remain vigilant, adopt enhanced security measures, and promptly report suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.
Investigations into the robbery, the fatal shooting, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
