Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has alleged that cannabis traffickers are using ambulances and bullion vans to conceal and transport drugs, complicating efforts to tackle the illegal trade.
The minister said intelligence gathered by security agencies had exposed the misuse of vehicles associated with legitimate services.
According to him, officers acting on information had intercepted ambulances carrying cannabis instead of patients.
Muntaka also alleged that some bullion vans used to deliver money for the Bank of Ghana were being loaded with cannabis on their return journeys.
He expressed concern about attitudes towards illegal cannabis cultivation in some communities, saying residents appeared to underestimate its seriousness.
The minister said security agencies were responding by destroying cannabis farms, arresting suspects and conducting intelligence-led operations to identify those involved.
“We are dealing with it, we are destroying the farms, we are arresting,” he said.
Muntaka maintained that the government would continue pursuing those engaged in illegal cultivation and trafficking.
