One person has died while four others were rescued after a two-storey apartment building collapsed at Adenta Newsite in the Greater Accra Region during a heavy rainstorm on Wednesday evening.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it received a distress call at about 6:36 p.m. and swiftly deployed rescue teams from its National Headquarters, with support from personnel from the Legon and Abelemkpe fire stations.
According to the GNFS, five occupants, including two children, were trapped when the building, located near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket, suddenly collapsed.
A coordinated search-and-rescue operation led to the successful extraction of four survivors. They were identified as Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda and David Dzigda. All four sustained injuries and were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for medical treatment.
Rescuers also succeeded in saving a dog that had been trapped beneath the debris.
The fifth victim, Margaret Kpeli, believed to be in her late 30s, was later pulled from the rubble unconscious. She was subsequently handed over to the Adenta District Police and was later confirmed dead.
The rescue operation concluded at approximately 10:54 p.m. after emergency teams completed an extensive search of the collapsed structure to ensure no additional victims remained trapped.
The GNFS commended residents who assisted with initial rescue efforts before emergency responders arrived and expressed gratitude to all agencies involved in the operation, including the Ghana Police Service and medical personnel.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and investigations are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
The tragedy is the latest in a string of building collapses in the capital. In March 2026, three people lost their lives when a three-storey building being used as a church collapsed on worshippers at Accra New Town.
