The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has intensified efforts to formalize businesses across Ghana following a high-level meeting at Jubilee House, where the Registrar of Companies, Mrs. Maame Samma Peprah, Esq., briefed Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on key initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s business environment.
The engagement focused on expanding business registration, improving regulatory compliance, and making ORC services more accessible to entrepreneurs nationwide.
Nationwide Registration Campaign Targets Informal Businesses
During the meeting, Mrs. Peprah outlined the ORC’s ongoing nationwide business registration and public sensitization clinics, which are designed to encourage operators in the informal sector to register their businesses and transition into the formal economy.
According to the Registrar, the initiative seeks to simplify the registration process, increase regulatory compliance, and provide business owners with greater access to the benefits of formalization.
ORC to Tighten Compliance Monitoring
Beyond registering new businesses, the ORC is also placing renewed emphasis on ensuring existing companies meet their statutory obligations.
Mrs. Peprah noted that while many businesses successfully complete the registration process, compliance with annual renewals and other legal requirements remains a challenge. The ORC plans to strengthen inspections and enforcement measures to ensure companies maintain their legal standing.
Mobile App to Eliminate Middlemen
As part of efforts to improve efficiency and reduce the reliance on intermediaries, commonly referred to as “goro boys,” the ORC is developing a mobile application that will enable entrepreneurs to complete business registration more easily and directly.
The digital platform is expected to simplify procedures, reduce costs, and make ORC services more accessible to businesses across the country.
Vice President Calls for Greater Public Awareness
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang commended the ORC’s efforts and encouraged the institution to continue expanding access to its services in every district across Ghana.
She also urged the agency to strengthen its public communication strategy by regularly highlighting its achievements, registration clinics, and outreach program. According to the Vice President, increased public awareness will encourage more businesses to voluntarily comply with registration requirements and safeguard their legal status.
Government Reaffirms Support for Business Growth
The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment that promotes entrepreneurship, regulatory compliance, and private sector growth.
Also present at the engagement were Chief of Staff Alex Percival Segbefia, Esq., and Policy Adviser Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, reflecting the collaborative approach being taken to advance Ghana’s business formalization agenda.
