Eight suspects have been arrested for allegedly beating a 21-year-old man during what police describe as an initiation into an internet fraud operation at Kotokrom in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region.
The Bono Regional Police Command said officers responded to a distress call at approximately 4:30 p.m. on October 4, 2026, after receiving information that a group was attacking a man.
Officers found the victim, Godstime Umukoro, with multiple marks of assault on his body and arrested the suspects at the scene. The command disclosed the incident in a statement dated October 9.
Police identified the suspects as Peter Mbam, 24; Godwin Moses, 26; Humble Oweifah, 18; Osas Ogbemudia, 30; Samuel Aisosa, 22; Ashile Godbess, 24; Alexander Uyuo, 30; and Patrick Romans, 25.
According to investigators, the suspects said the beating formed part of the victim’s initiation into their alleged internet fraud activities. They reportedly claimed they had undergone a similar process before joining the operation.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a man identified as Nwachukwu King Augustine, described by police as the group’s chairman, brought the suspects to Ghana.
Police further alleged that members used downloaded photographs of foreign military personnel to create false identities online. They reportedly posed as soldiers serving on the front lines in Yemen, engaged potential victims in conversations and solicited money.
Funds obtained through the alleged scheme were paid into an account belonging to the group’s leader, according to the police statement.
The Bono Regional Police Command commended members of the public for alerting officers and encouraged continued cooperation in tackling crime. The allegations against the suspects have not been proven in court.
