The Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects and recovered GH¢300,000 in cash after successfully preventing a staged highway robbery on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway in the Bono East Region.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the robbery was allegedly planned from within, with the victim’s own commercial truck driver accused of masterminding the operation after learning that his employer was carrying a large amount of money.
The attempted robbery occurred on the night of July 19, 2026, but swift police intervention brought the operation to an abrupt end before the suspects could escape with the cash.
Businessman Targeted During Cattle Purchase Trip
The victim, identified as 35-year-old businessman Yahaya Seidu, had reportedly hired a driver to transport him to Buipe, where he intended to purchase cattle.
According to police investigations, the driver allegedly became aware that Seidu was travelling with a substantial amount of cash for the transaction.
Instead of protecting his employer, the driver is accused of sharing information with a criminal group and arranging a fake highway robbery to steal the money.
Alleged Inside Job Behind the Attack
Investigators say the driver, identified as Samad Issahaka, 24, allegedly coordinated with accomplices to stage the attack.
The suspects reportedly planned to create the impression of an armed robbery by using a toy pistol during the operation.
The gang allegedly intercepted Seidu’s Kia Rhino truck along the Portor-Gurumpe Highway and attempted to carry out the robbery before police officers arrived at the scene.
Police Intercept Robbery Operation
The attempted heist was disrupted following intelligence received by law enforcement.
Officers from the Portor Police Barrier and Counter Terrorism Unit responded quickly and moved in on the suspects while the robbery was reportedly underway.
Their intervention prevented the suspects from escaping with the cash and led to the arrest of key members of the group.
Driver Exposed as Alleged Mastermind
During initial investigations, police arrested Abdul Sadat Ali, 24, who was reportedly found driving the suspected getaway vehicle, a Toyota Voxy.
Police interrogation reportedly led to information identifying Seidu’s driver, Samad Issahaka, as the alleged insider who provided details about the victim’s movements and cash possession.
The arrest of the two suspects helped investigators trace other individuals allegedly involved in the operation.
Four Additional Suspects Arrested
Following further intelligence-led operations, police tracked down four other suspects who had fled into nearby bushes after the failed robbery attempt.
All six suspects involved in the alleged scheme are now in police custody.
The recovered GH¢300,000 has been secured by authorities as part of the evidence to support the ongoing investigation.
Suspects to Face Court
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the suspects are being processed for court as investigations continue.
Authorities are expected to conduct further inquiries into the alleged criminal network, including the planning of the robbery, the roles played by each suspect, and whether they may be connected to other similar incidents.
The successful intervention highlights the role of intelligence-led policing and rapid response operations in tackling highway robbery and organized crime across Ghana.
