President John Dramani Mahama has inspected ongoing construction and rehabilitation works on the Asikuma–Anyirawase Road, as part of his two-day “Resetting Ghana” working tour of the Volta Region.
The inspection, conducted on July 16, 2026, formed part of the President’s assessment of major infrastructure projects being undertaken to improve transportation networks, promote economic activity, and enhance connectivity across the region.
Inspection Covers Key Road Corridor
President Mahama’s visit focused on the rehabilitation of the Asikuma Junction to Anyirawase Road corridor, covering approximately kilometers 26.0 to 49.4 of the project stretch.
The project is being executed by engineering firm Ultra Nexus, which is responsible for the ongoing construction and rehabilitation works along the route.
The road forms part of a much larger transport development initiative involving the 177-kilometer Atimpoku–Asikuma–Anyirawase–Ho–Denu–Aflao corridor, a major route expected to improve movement between communities in the Volta Region and other parts of the country.
Additional Project Assessments
During the tour, President Mahama also inspected progress on other major road projects, including:
- The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Bypass project.
- The Anyirawase–Ho Road rehabilitation project.
The assessments allowed the President and government officials to evaluate construction progress, identify challenges, and ensure that the projects remain aligned with national infrastructure objectives.
Part of Government’s GH₵40 Billion “Big Push” Program
The road rehabilitation works are being implemented under the government’s flagship GH₵40 billion “Big Push” infrastructure program, which is aimed at upgrading critical road networks across Ghana.
The initiative is designed to improve transportation efficiency, open up economic opportunities, and modernize key corridors that support trade, agriculture, tourism, and regional development.
Roads as Economic Catalysts
During the inspection, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, briefed President Mahama on the progress of the projects.
The Minister emphasized that the road developments should not be viewed merely as transportation projects, but as strategic investments capable of transforming local economies.
He explained that improved road infrastructure would support businesses, enhance access to markets, and create new opportunities for communities along the corridor.
Traditional Leaders Welcome President’s Visit
President Mahama was received during the inspection by Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, alongside traditional authorities, local leaders, and community representatives.
The leaders expressed support for the ongoing infrastructure investments, highlighting the importance of improved roads in boosting economic activities and improving the quality of life for residents.
Boosting Regional and Cross-Border Connectivity
When completed, the Asikuma–Anyirawase section and the wider transport corridor are expected to significantly reduce travel times between the Eastern, Volta, and Greater Accra Regions.
The route will also strengthen Ghana’s connection to the Aflao border, improving cross-border trade and logistics along the West African regional corridor.
Government officials say the project will play a key role in expanding economic integration, improving mobility, and positioning the Volta Region as an important gateway for domestic and international commerce.
Commitment to Infrastructure Development
The inspection forms part of President Mahama’s broader effort to monitor major development projects nationwide and ensure that government investments deliver measurable benefits to citizens.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing strategic infrastructure projects that support economic growth, regional development, and improved public services across Ghana.
