A teacher and hostel caretaker at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School has been arrested after a viral video allegedly captured him violently assaulting an 18-year-old female student, triggering widespread public outrage and prompting investigations by both the police and education authorities.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Eric Buernortey Apaflo, was taken into custody by the Ashanti Regional Police Command following the circulation of footage that showed a physical confrontation between him and final-year student Patience Chibu inside the school’s hostel facility.
The incident has ignited national debate over student safety, discipline in educational institutions, and the conduct expected of teachers entrusted with the welfare of young people.
Viral Video Triggers National Reaction
The incident reportedly occurred at the hostel complex of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
According to preliminary reports, Apaflo, who served as both a teacher and hostel caretaker, confronted Chibu and a group of male students over allegations of misconduct and disputes involving unpaid hostel fees.
What began as a verbal disagreement allegedly escalated into a physical altercation.
Video footage that quickly spread across social media platforms appears to show the teacher repeatedly striking the student before lifting her and forcefully throwing her to the ground.
The footage also captured the reactions of nearby students, many of whom can be heard screaming and pleading with the teacher to stop the assault.
Witnesses reported that some students appealed to him by emphasizing that the victim was a female student. The teacher allegedly responded angrily during the confrontation, further intensifying public condemnation after the video surfaced online.
The footage generated widespread criticism from parents, educators, civil society organizations, and members of the public, many of whom called for immediate action against the teacher.
Student Anger Erupts Into Campus Unrest
The assault reportedly triggered immediate outrage among students on campus.
According to eyewitness accounts, groups of students reacted angrily after witnessing the attack on their colleague. Some allegedly began throwing stones at the teacher, while others reportedly sought assistance from youth in the surrounding Nyinahin community.
The situation rapidly escalated into a security concern, raising fears of retaliatory violence against the accused teacher.
Authorities say tensions on campus continued to rise as word of the incident spread among students and residents.
Police Rush to Restore Order
Faced with a deteriorating security situation, the Nyinahin District Police Patrol Team was deployed to the school at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026.
Police officers intervened to restore order, prevent further violence, and safely remove the teacher from the premises.
Apaflo was subsequently taken into custody and transported to a police facility, where he remains while investigations continue.
Law enforcement officials have confirmed that the case is being treated as a criminal matter and that statements are being collected from witnesses, students, school authorities, and other individuals connected to the incident.
Authorities have also initiated measures to support the victim.
Patience Chibu was issued an official police medical report form to facilitate clinical examination and treatment.
Medical assessments are expected to determine the extent of any injuries sustained during the confrontation.
Advocates for student welfare have emphasized the importance of providing both medical and psychological support to the student, noting that incidents of physical violence can have long-lasting emotional consequences beyond visible injuries.
Ghana Education Service Launches Investigation
Alongside the criminal investigation, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has initiated an administrative inquiry into the incident.
GES Public Relations Officer Daniel Fenyi confirmed that the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate has begun a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the assault.
The investigation will examine the actions of the teacher, the school’s disciplinary procedures, and whether institutional safeguards designed to protect students were properly followed.
A detailed report is expected to be submitted to GES headquarters for further consideration.
Depending on the findings, the teacher could face a range of disciplinary measures under education service regulations, including suspension, dismissal, or the revocation of professional teaching credentials.
Renewed Focus on Student Protection
The incident has reignited discussions about the treatment of students within Ghana’s educational system and the responsibilities of teachers and school administrators.
Education experts and child rights advocates have argued that while schools must maintain discipline, disciplinary actions should never cross the line into physical abuse or violence.
Many have called for stronger enforcement of child protection policies, enhanced teacher training, and clearer reporting mechanisms to ensure that students can safely report misconduct.
As investigations continue, the case is expected to remain under intense public scrutiny, with many Ghanaians demanding accountability and assurances that similar incidents will not occur in schools across the country.
For now, police investigations and the Ghana Education Service’s inquiry will determine the legal and professional consequences facing the accused teacher, while attention remains focused on the recovery and well-being of the student at the center of the controversy.
