Traoré says Burkina Faso will stop ordering foreign armored vehicles as Nanga fleet expands

Traoré says Burkina Faso will stop ordering foreign armoured vehicles

Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, says the country will stop placing new orders for armored vehicles from abroad as it expands a program to adapt and assemble vehicles locally.

The announcement follows the presentation of the Nanga fleet, which the government says is being prepared for its defense and security forces and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland, a civilian force that supports the military. Traoré has said vehicles already ordered from overseas will still be delivered. His announcement concerns future armored-vehicle orders, rather than a confirmed ban on every type of imported defense equipment.

Traoré says nearly 300 Nanga vehicles have been produced or adapted since November 2025. He identified a Burkinabé company, Faso Armored, as responsible for the work but said its production location would remain undisclosed for security reasons. The reported output and deployment figures have not been independently verified.

The vehicles have been described as pickups whose original bodies are replaced with locally designed armored structures suited to conditions in Burkina Faso. That process represents local adaptation and assembly; it does not establish that every major component is manufactured in the country. Publicly available reporting does not provide independent test results for the detailed ballistic protection and surveillance capabilities claimed for the fleet.

The push for local production comes as Burkina Faso continues to fight armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State. Traoré, who took power in a 2022 coup, has presented domestic manufacturing as a way to reduce reliance on overseas suppliers and equip forces according to local operational needs. Whether the Nanga program can consistently produce, maintain and protect vehicles at the scale claimed by the government remains to be established.
