Trump Cancels Planned Livestream of Nidal Hasan’s Execution

Nidal Hasan

President Donald Trump has announced that the scheduled execution of Fort Hood gunman Nidal Hasan will not be livestreamed, reversing a proposal backed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth following widespread criticism.

In a statement on Truth Social on October 15, 2026, Trump said the execution would proceed by firing squad on December 3, with immediate family members of Hasan’s victims permitted to witness it in person.

The proposed broadcast had drawn objections from religious leaders, political figures and members of the public. Critics warned that televising the execution could turn it into a public spectacle and provide material for extremist propaganda.

Trump said he had considered a broadcast a potential deterrent but acknowledged concerns raised by people opposed to watching the execution.

The announcement came amid strong public resistance to the proposal. A nationwide poll cited in coverage of the controversy found that roughly eight in 10 Americans opposed livestreaming the execution.

Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson had also said they did not intend to watch the broadcast.

Following Trump’s announcement, a Pentagon spokesman said the president and Hegseth had discussed the matter and were “completely aligned” on the decision.

The execution had originally been planned for Terre Haute, Indiana, although Hegseth sought to move it to Fort Hood, Texas, where the attack occurred. The announcement cancelling the livestream did not settle the location question.

Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, was sentenced to death in 2013 for killing 13 people and wounding 32 others in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.

If carried out as scheduled, his execution would be the first by the United States military in more than six decades.
