Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has arrived in Barcelona to join global leaders at a high-level summit focused on strengthening democratic governance.
She is scheduled to speak at the fourth High-Level Meeting of the In Defence of Democracy Initiative on April 18, hosted by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The gathering brings together heads of state and senior officials from countries including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Spain.
Notable participants expected at the summit include Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Gustavo Petro, and Cyril Ramaphosa.
Ghana’s presence at the meeting highlights its growing role, alongside other West African nations, in advancing global discussions on democratic governance and international cooperation.
Deliberations at the summit will centre on safeguarding democratic institutions amid rising global challenges. Key issues on the agenda include combating disinformation, protecting digital infrastructure, addressing extremism, and ensuring the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Leaders are also expected to explore broader security concerns and strengthen collaboration between Africa and Latin America, particularly in areas such as governance, innovation, and sustainable development.
The initiative, launched in 2024, seeks to coordinate international efforts to defend democratic systems, with previous meetings held in New York and Santiago.
Ahead of the summit, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is expected to visit GB Foods in Spain and attend a dinner for progressive leaders at the National Art Museum of Catalonia on April 17.
Her visit will conclude with an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Spain on April 19.
