Al Nassr manager Ange Postecoglou has explained his bold decision to substitute Cristiano Ronaldo at halftime during his team’s dramatic 3–2 comeback victory over Al Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.
Ronaldo was withdrawn with Al Nassr trailing 2–0 and playing with 10 men following the early dismissal of goalkeeper Bento.
Rather than being injury-related, Postecoglou said the substitution formed part of the tactical changes he believed were necessary to give his team a chance of recovering from its difficult first half.
Bento’s Red Card Changes Al Nassr’s Plans
Al Nassr’s original game plan was disrupted in the 12th minute when Bento rushed out of his penalty area and brought down Al Ettifaq striker Moussa Dembélé.
The referee showed the Brazilian goalkeeper a straight red card, forcing Postecoglou to make an immediate substitution. Attacker Ângelo was withdrawn to allow 18-year-old reserve goalkeeper Abdulrahman Al-Otaibi to enter the match.
Playing with a numerical advantage, Al Ettifaq gradually took control of the contest.
Ondrej Duda opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a powerful effort from outside the penalty area. Álvaro Medrán doubled the hosts’ lead during first-half stoppage time, sending Al Nassr into the interval facing a two-goal deficit.
Ronaldo appeared visibly frustrated as the players left the field, but he did not return for the second half.
Al-Khaibari Replaces Ronaldo
Postecoglou introduced defensive midfielder Abdullah Al-Khaibari in place of the Al Nassr captain at the interval.
The move gave the visitors an additional presence in central midfield and helped them establish greater defensive balance while operating with one player fewer.
With Ronaldo withdrawn, Al Nassr retained quicker and more mobile attacking options who could cover ground, press opponents and break forward when possession was regained.
Postecoglou said his decision was based on what he believed the substitutes could contribute to the team under the circumstances.
“When I made the substitutions, including taking Ronaldo off, I believed the players coming on could make an impact,” the Australian coach explained.
“I came here to help the players, so as I said, I’m proud of them because every substitute made a positive contribution.”
His explanation indicated that Ronaldo’s removal was a tactical decision rather than a punishment or a response to an injury.
Sadio Mané Inspires Remarkable Comeback
Al Nassr remained 2–0 behind for much of the second half but continued searching for a way back into the match.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 74th minute when Sadio Mané reduced the deficit. The Senegal international’s goal changed the momentum of the contest and gave the visitors renewed belief.
Only three minutes later, defender Abdulelah Al-Amri rose to score with a header, bringing Al Nassr level at 2–2.
Despite playing with 10 men, Postecoglou’s side continued pushing for the winner instead of settling for a point.

The turnaround preserved Al Nassr’s perfect start to the league campaign and demonstrated the resilience of a team forced to play most of the match with a numerical disadvantage.
Ronaldo Celebrates Despite Halftime Frustration
Although Ronaldo appeared unhappy when he left the field at halftime, he publicly celebrated the result after the final whistle.
The Portuguese forward reacted to the victory on social media with the message:
“WHAT. A. COMEBACK.”
His reaction shifted attention away from his substitution and towards the team’s extraordinary second-half performance.
Postecoglou also praised the mentality of his players and the impact made by those introduced from the bench.
The decision to remove one of football’s most famous players while chasing a two-goal deficit represented a significant early test of the manager’s authority and tactical judgement at Al Nassr.
On this occasion, the gamble produced the desired result. Al-Khaibari helped stabilize the midfield, the remaining attackers continued threatening Al Ettifaq, and Mané delivered two decisive goals.
The victory will be remembered not only for Al Nassr’s comeback but also for Postecoglou’s willingness to make a difficult tactical decision involving his captain and highest-profile player.
For Ronaldo, the match ended without a goal and after only 45 minutes on the pitch. For Al Nassr, however, it concluded with three points and one of the most remarkable recoveries of the Saudi Pro League season.
