President’s Remarks Played in Assin-North by Election in Court

AN

During the proceedings of the Assin- North by-election trial on Thursday, July 6, an audio recording containing President Akufo-Addo’s comments regarding James Gyakye Quayson at a campaign rally was played openly in court. Tsatsu Tsikata, the lawyer representing Quayson, referred to this audio as evidence while arguing against alleged prejudiced remarks made against his client.

Tsikata, acting on behalf of Quayson, submitted a motion requesting a suspension of the trial until the Court of Appeal decides on the appeal challenging the court’s decision to conduct daily hearings. He emphasized that the President’s statements had violated Quayson’s right to a fair trial.

However, Godfred Yeboah Dame, the Attorney-General, intervened and expressed his opinion that it was unjust to play only a portion of the audio. He believed that presenting only 15 seconds of the recording lacked the context and insisted the complete video should have been shown in court.

Tsikata countered this argument, stating that denying the motion for a suspension would imply a predetermined outcome of the trial. He emphasized the significance of considering the potential impact of the President’s remarks on the fairness of the proceedings.

Meanwhile, the High Court has adjourned the case until July 11 when a ruling will be delivered regarding the motion to suspend the proceedings.
