Protests in Kenya result in student death and 200 arrests – police

A university student in Kenya was killed, and over 200 people were arrested during protests that swept across the country on Monday. They organized the demonstrations in response to the rising cost of living under President William Ruto’s government. Opposition leader Raila Odinga had called for the protests.

Protesters gathered in the capital city of Nairobi and several other cities, chanting slogans and carrying signs decrying the high cost of basic goods and services. Police had to respond with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds, and clashes erupted between protesters and security forces.

Tragically, a university student was killed during the protests. The circumstances of the student’s death are unknown.

The protests come amid growing frustration among Kenyans over the rising cost of living, which has been exacerbated by inflation, a weak economy, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Many Kenyans feel the government has not done enough to address their concerns, and protests like these are likely to continue unless the situation improves.
