2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations got off to a thrilling start for Ghana national under-17 football team and Algeria national under-17 football team as the two sides battled to an entertaining 2-2 draw in their Group D opener on Thursday.

Ghana raced into an early two-goal lead before Algeria mounted an impressive second-half comeback in a match filled with drama, stunning goals, and missed opportunities.

Ghana Start Strong

The Black Starlets made the perfect start just three minutes into the match when Yao Gavi Robinho capitalized on a costly goalkeeping mistake from Algeria to fire Ghana ahead.

Ghana continued to dominate the opening stages and doubled their advantage in the 10th minute through Eric Adu Gyamfi, who produced a spectacular long-range chip that left the Algerian defense stunned.

With a 2-0 lead inside the first 10 minutes, Ghana looked firmly in control as Algeria struggled to respond during the first half.

Algeria Fight Back in the Second Half

Algeria returned from the break with renewed intensity and finally found a breakthrough in the 57th minute. Adam Benali converted a well-worked assist from Mahdi Maghlout to cut the deficit and spark hopes of a comeback.

Just three minutes later, Algeria drew level when Melwane Zaidi headed home from a dangerous Yacine Abed cross, completing a rapid turnaround that shifted the momentum entirely in favor of the North Africans.

The hosts then had a golden opportunity to complete the comeback in the 67th minute after being awarded a penalty. However, Ilyas Grini failed to capitalize, blasting his effort over the crossbar and allowing Ghana to escape with a point.
