The Gabonese government has imposed a permanent ban on star forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from representing the country in international football following Gabon’s disastrous campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The decision comes after the national team, the Panthers, endured a humiliating tournament, failing to record a single win and finishing bottom of their group.
Acting Minister of Sports, Dr Simplice-Désire Mamboula, announced the measures in a televised national address, revealing that the government had dissolved the national team’s technical staff, suspended all team activities, and barred both Aubameyang and veteran defender Bruno Ecuele Manga from future national team call-ups.
According to the Minister, the sanctions were part of sweeping reforms aimed at restoring discipline and accountability within Gabonese football.
The decision followed a dramatic 3-2 defeat to defending champions Ivory Coast, a match in which Gabon surrendered a 2-0 lead, sealing their early exit from the tournament.
