Portugal produced a commanding display to defeat Uzbekistan 5-0 at NRG Stadium in Houston on Tuesday, with Cristiano Ronaldo writing another chapter in football history by scoring twice in a dominant Group K victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After being held to a disappointing draw in their opening match against DR Congo, Portugal responded emphatically, overwhelming Uzbekistan from start to finish to boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
Ronaldo wasted little time making an impact, opening the scoring in just the sixth minute. The veteran forward met a pinpoint cross from João Cancelo inside the six-yard box, swiveling sharply before firing past goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov. The goal saw the 41-year-old become the first player in football history to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Portugal doubled their advantage in the 17th minute through Nuno Mendes, who curled a superb left-footed free kick around the defensive wall and into the net, leaving the Uzbek goalkeeper with no chance.
The Portuguese captain struck again six minutes before halftime after Bruno Fernandes intercepted possession and threaded a perfectly weighted pass through the defense. Ronaldo calmly slotted home his second goal of the afternoon to make it 3-0, registering his 10th career World Cup goal and moving past Eusébio as Portugal’s all-time leading scorer in the tournament.
The fourth goal arrived in the 60th minute following a Fernandes corner kick that sparked confusion inside the penalty area. After several ricochets, the ball ultimately deflected into the net off Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov for an unfortunate own goal.
Substitute Rafael Leão completed the rout in the 87th minute, collecting a deflected cross from Nélson Semedo before unleashing a powerful strike into the top corner to seal an emphatic 5-0 victory.
The convincing result lifts Portugal to the top of Group K on four points, significantly improving their goal difference ahead of the final round of group-stage fixtures. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, remains rooted to the bottom of the standings without a point after suffering consecutive defeats.
Portugal will now turn their attention to a highly anticipated showdown against Colombia in Miami on Saturday, a match expected to play a decisive role in determining the final Group K standings and one of the marquee fixtures of the tournament.
