Senegal AFCON 2025: Three Fans Released from Moroccan Custody

Senegalese fans release

Three Senegalese football fans have been released from Al Arjat 2 prison near Rabat, Morocco, after completing three-month sentences tied to unrest during the AFCON 2025 final. The individuals were among a group of 18 Senegalese supporters who had been convicted for their involvement in violent incidents that occurred on January 18 during the highly charged match between Senegal and Morocco.

The three were freed after serving their full 90-day terms. On the same day, a French national of Algerian origin, who had also been detained for throwing a water bottle during the final, was released after completing a similar sentence.

Following their release, the Senegalese fans were received by members of the Senegalese Embassy at a police station after being transferred from prison custody. The diplomatic presence underscored ongoing efforts to support citizens involved in the incident.

However, not all those convicted have regained their freedom. Fifteen other Senegalese fans remain in custody and are serving longer prison terms ranging from six months to one year. These sentences were recently upheld by the Rabat Court of Appeal, reinforcing the legal consequences stemming from the events of that day.

The group had originally been charged with hooliganism, acts of violence against law enforcement, and damage to sports infrastructure at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. The unrest reportedly erupted after a controversial refereeing decision during the final, which heightened tensions among supporters.

Public support for the released fans has been visible across social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. Defense lawyer Patrick Kabou also expressed appreciation for the diplomatic efforts that contributed to the outcome, highlighting the role of engagement between authorities and representatives in securing the fans’ release.
