Tough race for NPP in Dome Kwabenya if Adwoa Safo does not run

According to Mussa Dankwah, the CEO of Global InfoAnalytics, the upcoming 2024 general elections in the Dome Kwabenya constituency will pose a significant challenge for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if the incumbent MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, decides not to run. He believes that the election of Elikplim Akurugu from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made it difficult for the NPP to secure the seat.

Elikplim emerged as the winner of the NDC’s parliamentary primaries in the constituency, receiving 1,564 votes. This marks her second victory in the party’s primaries for the Dome Kwabenya constituency. In a discussion on the Point of View show on Citi TV hosted by Bernard Avle, Mussa Dankwah expressed his observation that Sarah Adwoa Safo has been instrumental in securing votes for the NPP in the constituency. Consequently, if she chooses not to run in the 2024 elections, the NPP’s chances of retaining the seat will become slim.

Mussa Dankwah stated, “With Elikplim Akurugu in the picture, the parliamentary elections will be a tough race for the NPP if the incumbent MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is not running in Dome Kwabenya. If Sarah Adwoa Safo doesn’t contest, it will be an open race between the two political parties – NPP and NDC. Dome Kwabenya, which is one of NPP’s strongholds, has been stronger under Sarah Adwoa Safo. If Adwoa Safo is not on the ballot paper in the 2024 general elections, believe me, the race will be tough.”

He further predicted that disgruntled NPP members in Dome Kwabenya are likely to vote for Elikplim Akurugu in the general elections if Adwoa Safo declines to participate in the NPP’s primaries. According to his polls, 45 percent of NPP victories in the area came from Taifa North and Taifa South. In their last survey conducted in October 2022, when issues concerning Sarah Adwoa Safo arose, Elikplim Akurugu was leading in Taifa North, which is unprecedented. There appears to be a division within the NPP in the constituency, and NPP members who have grievances with the party may opt to vote for Elikplim Akurugu.
