Director-General of the National Lottery Authority, Mr. Sammi Awuku, reviewed the latest reports on the lottery industry and couldn’t help but feel frustrated. Despite the NLA’s efforts to regulate the industry, there are still too many illegal lottery activities nationwide.
He knows Ghana is not alone in facing this problem. The World Lottery Association has reported significant revenue losses because of illegal activities, which must be addressed. So the NLA is working with National Security to identify and prosecute individuals engaged in unlawful lottery activities.
The Director General met with representatives from National Security to discuss how they could work together on this issue. After several meetings, they decided the best approach would be to conduct undercover operations to catch illegal lottery operators in the act.
According to Mr. Awuku, the NLA does not charge 35%, and it’s illegal for anyone to set that rate.
The World Lottery Association estimates the global body lost $1.3 trillion through illegal lottery activities. That’s why they’ve been serious about engaging the state security agencies this year, hoping the story will differ.
