Later this month, US Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Douglas Emhoff will embark on their first official trip to the African continent. They will begin their journey in Accra, Ghana, before travelling to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Their weeklong trip, which runs from March 25 to April 2, will conclude in Lusaka, Zambia, before they return to Washington. This visit underscores the importance of US engagement with Africa and the Biden administration’s commitment to strengthening ties with the continent.

The upcoming visit by Vice President Kamala Harris to Africa will serve to further develop the relationships forged during the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, which was hosted by President Biden in Washington in December 2022. In a statement released by the White House, it was emphasized that the visit will reinforce the United States’ partnerships throughout the African continent and facilitate collaboration on issues of mutual interest, including security and economic prosperity.

During her trip, Vice President Kamala Harris will work alongside African governments and private sector partners to advance initiatives aimed at expanding access to the digital economy, promoting climate adaptation and resilience, and strengthening business ties and investment. This will be achieved through supporting innovation, entrepreneurship, and the economic empowerment of women.

The Vice President will hold discussions with President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, President Samia Hassan of Tanzania, and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia on a range of regional and global priorities, such as the promotion of democracy, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, food security, and the impact of Russia’s unprovoked war in Ukraine, among other issues.

Additionally, the Vice President will interact with civil society groups, including young leaders, business representatives, entrepreneurs, and members of the African Diaspora, as part of her engagement with diverse stakeholders.
