US Vice President Kamala Harris visited the Cape Coast Castle, a former slave trading fortification that played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade. The castle built by the Portuguese in the 15th century, was a key hub for the slave trade for over 400 years.
During her tour of the castle, Harris was visibly emotional as she walked through the dark dungeons, where thousands of enslaved Africans were held before being shipped off to the Americas. The Ghanaian Minister of Tourism and other officials joined her as they explored the castle and learned about its history.
In a press conference after the tour, Harris emphasized the importance of acknowledging and confronting the painful history of the transatlantic slave trade. She called on people around the world to remember the painful sacrifices of our forefathers who fought for freedom, and to ensure that the stories of their struggles are told.
“Today’s visit to the Cape Coast Castle was a deeply moving experience,” Harris said. “It reminds us to confront the dark history of slavery and the atrocities committed against Black people in order to build a more just and fair future for all.”
Vice President Harris who is the first Black and South Asian American woman to serve in this capacity, has been vocal about her commitment to addressing issues of racial inequality and social justice. Her visit to the Cape Coast Castle was part of her first official trip to Africa as vice president.
