The GWCL has announced an increase in tariffs for all consumer groups, effective June 1, 2023. This price change follows the approval of new water tariffs for the second quarter of 2023 by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
According to a statement released by the PURC on May 18, the decision to raise tariffs considered factors such as the cost of electricity, higher expenses for chemicals used in raw water treatment, the exchange rate between the Ghana Cedi and the US Dollar, and inflation.
The commission emphasized its commitment to monitoring the performance of utility service providers to ensure that customers receive value for their money and high-quality services.
Besides the water tariff increase, the PURC has raised electricity and natural gas tariffs by 18.36% for the same period. The decision was made to prevent prolonged power outages, which adversely affect jobs and livelihoods, and minimize the impact of rate hikes on consumers.
The Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism has been implemented to track and reflect changes in crucial factors influencing natural gas and electricity tariffs.
