We’ll support James Quayson to reclaim the Assin North seat–NDC

The leadership of NDC has announced its support for James Gyakye Quayson, who is facing challenges, to run again as the Member of Parliament for Assin North.

Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, stated the party would endorse Mr. Quayson in a forthcoming by-election. On Wednesday, May 18, 2023, the NDC released a statement, signed by its General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, expressing their view that the Supreme Court’s decision was “unusual.”

The party pointed out that based on previous cases involving Honourable J.H. Mensah, Honourable Baba Jamal, and Honourable Peter Amewu, it is understood that the Supreme Court does not possess the authority to invalidate a Parliamentary election and such matters should be addressed in the High Court. The NDC finds the Supreme Court’s recent ruling perplexing.

The party affirmed its preparedness for the ensuing by-election resulting from this decision. They declared they would fully support Honourable Quayson, including the Minority Caucus in Parliament, to secure an even more resounding victory for him in the upcoming by-election.
In a unanimous ruling, the Supreme Court has ordered Parliament to remove James Gyakye Quayson’s name as a Member of Parliament. The Court determined on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, that Mr. Gyakye Quayson’s election as MP for Assin North was unconstitutional because of his possession of dual citizenship when he filed to contest the 2020 elections.

Michael Ankomah Nimfa, a resident of Assin Bereku in the Central region, took legal action against Mr. Quayson, seeking to prevent him from holding himself as an MP after a Cape Coast High Court nullified his election as Assin North MP in July 2021. The petitioner argued that James Gyakye Quayson’s continued occupancy of the office, despite the High Court’s judgment annulling his election, violated the constitution and was unfair to the people of Assin North.
