The Government of Ghana has evacuated 44 more Ghanaians from South Africa as part of the second phase of its repatriation exercise following the reported wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
The latest group arrived at the Accra International Airport on Wednesday, August 6, 2026, where they were received by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
Their return brings to 1,368 the total number of Ghanaians repatriated from South Africa since the exercise began in May 2026.
Welcoming the returnees, the Ministry’s Chief Coordinator for Political and Economic Affairs, Ambassador Harold Agyemang, thanked God for their safe arrival and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of Ghanaians living abroad.
He assured the returnees of government’s support towards their reintegration and encouraged them to remain hopeful as they rebuild their lives following their experiences in South Africa.
Ambassador Agyemang urged the returnees to draw on the skills, knowledge and resilience they acquired during their stay abroad to rebuild their livelihoods and contribute to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
He disclosed that the government would profile each returnee based on their skills, qualifications and career aspirations to help identify suitable employment and livelihood opportunities as part of the reintegration process.
He further announced that each returnee would receive a government-funded cash grant to assist them in restarting their lives and settling back into their communities.
Officials from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross Society, Port Health and other state agencies were at the airport to provide immediate assistance and facilitate the smooth reception of the evacuees.
Government officials said more Ghanaians are expected to be evacuated from South Africa in the coming days as the second phase of the repatriation exercise continues.
