Africa’s creative industries took center stage in the climate conversation on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as Accra hosted the inaugural Climate x Culture Summit at the Google Artificial Intelligence Community Centre.
Held under the theme “Designing Sustainable Creative Experiences for Africa,” the event brought together creative professionals, innovators, corporate leaders and technology experts to examine how the continent’s cultural sector can support environmental sustainability.
Culture Joint organised the summit in partnership with the Office of the Minister of State in charge of Climate Change and Sustainability at the Office of the President of Ghana. The initiative sought to expand participation in climate action by placing greater emphasis on the influence of culture and everyday choices.
Discussions explored how music, fashion, visual arts and live entertainment shape consumption habits and public attitudes. Participants considered how these platforms could encourage environmentally responsible behavior and make climate issues more accessible to communities.
Access to funding also featured prominently, with attention directed towards securing financial support and resources for climate-conscious projects within Africa’s creative economy.
The summit further promoted collaboration between creative businesses and corporate institutions. Working with the Center for CSR West Africa, the event encouraged companies and event organizers to incorporate practical environmental measures into their operations.
Among the priorities outlined were commitments to integrate green design and circular economy principles into concerts, fashion and other creative experiences. These approaches emphasize reducing waste, reusing materials and making better use of resources.
Other proposed outcomes included a sustainable event production guide suited to African festivals and venues, alongside an Accra Climate Cultural Court intended to support continued collaboration.
The gathering positioned storytelling, media and technology as important tools for strengthening public engagement with climate action, highlighting the role creative professionals can play in turning environmental awareness into everyday practice.
