The Economic Community of West African States is expected to provide US$250,000, equivalent to approximately GH₵3 million, to support victims of the recent floods in Ghana.
Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the assistance on Sunday, August 2, 2026, after his ministry received official notification from the ECOWAS Commission.
Mr. Ablakwa said the funding would be transferred directly to the appropriate disaster-relief authorities immediately after it is received by the government.
He explained that the arrangement is intended to promote transparency and ensure the entire amount is used to assist people and communities affected by the disaster.
The government expressed gratitude to ECOWAS for showing regional solidarity and responding to Ghana’s humanitarian needs during the crisis.
The emergency support follows the devastating floods of June 29, 2026, which affected communities across seven regions of the country.
The disaster was triggered by torrential rainfall reportedly reaching 140 millimeters in some areas, overwhelming drainage systems and causing widespread destruction.
At least 13 people were reported dead, while several others remained missing following the floods.
Preliminary assessments by the Ministry of the Interior indicated that 7,761 households were severely affected, resulting in the displacement of approximately 38,802 people.
The floods also damaged major roads and other transport infrastructure, while homes, businesses and personal property were destroyed or severely affected.
The ECOWAS contribution will supplement ongoing government and private-sector efforts to deliver food, temporary shelter, clothing, medical supplies and other essential assistance to affected communities.
President John Dramani Mahama has already approved the release of GH₵300 million in contingency funding to support emergency interventions and reconstruction efforts.
Several local companies and organizations have also made donations to assist displaced families and help restore basic services in the affected areas.
Authorities are expected to prioritize immediate humanitarian relief while assessing the longer-term cost of rebuilding damaged infrastructure and resettling displaced households.
The government has assured the public that the ECOWAS donation and other relief funds will be distributed transparently to ensure assistance reaches the intended beneficiaries.
