Ethiopia has officially assumed the chairship of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) for April 2026, marking its first time leading the body since rejoining as a member in April 2025.
The country is set to formally begin presiding over the council’s activities on April 7, 2026, following a flag-hoisting ceremony that will also welcome newly elected members. During its tenure, Ethiopia will guide discussions across a structured agenda aimed at addressing key peace and security concerns on the continent.
The council’s program for the month includes six major agenda items. Two of these will focus on country-specific security situations, while four thematic sessions will address broader continental challenges related to peace and stability. Most of the meetings are expected to take place at the ambassadorial level, with one high-level session scheduled at the ministerial level.
Ethiopia’s leadership comes at a strategically significant time. As a founding member of the African Union and its predecessor, the Organization of African Unity, the country’s role is being framed as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the African Peace and Security Architecture. Officials have emphasized that the chairship reflects Ethiopia’s continued commitment to supporting conflict prevention, management, and resolution across the continent.
The current term also follows Ethiopia’s three-year endorsement to the council, covering the period from 2025 to 2028, which was confirmed during the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly. Ethiopia assumes the rotating chairmanship from Algeria, which held the position in March 2026.
