John Dramani Mahama has been elected First Vice Chair of the African Union during the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government held in Addis Ababa.
The election, which took place on February 14, 2026, forms part of the annual reconstitution of the AU Bureau. The bureau works closely with the Chairperson to coordinate the activities of the Union and provide leadership on key continental matters.
Burundi’s President, Évariste Ndayishimiye, was elected Chairperson of the AU for 2026, while Ghana, representing the West African region, secured the First Vice Chair position through President Mahama’s election.
The summit was convened under the theme “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” bringing together African leaders to deliberate on critical issues including water security, sanitation, peace, security, and institutional reforms.
President Mahama’s election places Ghana in a strategic leadership role within the continental body and reinforces the country’s commitment to advancing regional integration, sustainable development, and collective action across Africa.
With this appointment, Ghana is expected to play a central role in supporting the AU Chair and shaping policy direction within the Union over the coming year.
