Police in Nigeria’s Ogun State have rescued 11 Ghanaian nationals who were allegedly held against their will in Sagamu after being promised visas to Canada and Spain.
The victims, comprising seven men and four women, reportedly paid approximately GH¢40,000 each to individuals who claimed they could arrange their travel documents.
According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that a Ghanaian national recruited the victims, collected their money and brought them to Nigeria, where they were subsequently held captive.
Operatives from the Ogun State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit carried out the rescue after receiving actionable intelligence on October 19, 2026. The officers raided the suspected hideout and freed all 11 victims.
The rescued individuals are receiving medical attention and support while Nigerian authorities work with the Ghana High Commission to arrange their return home.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, said investigators were pursuing those responsible and working to uncover the wider network behind the alleged fraud. No arrests had been announced at the time of reporting.
The incident has prompted renewed warnings about fraudulent overseas travel offers. Prospective travelers have been urged to verify visa requirements and the credentials of travel agents through the relevant embassies before paying money or travelling to another country for promised documentation.
