President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral Project with immediate effect.
The directive, announced by the Presidency, ends the tenure of the board members appointed under the previous administration to supervise the construction and management of the proposed interdenominational worship complex.
As part of the decision, the government has ordered a comprehensive financial and technical audit of the project. The exercise will examine expenditures, contracts and state funds committed to the development since its inception.
The review is expected to assess how public resources allocated to the project were used and evaluate the technical condition of work completed at the construction site.
It will also provide the government with information needed to determine the project’s current financial obligations, contractual commitments and prospects for completion.
The National Cathedral has generated considerable public debate over its cost, funding arrangements and the delays that have affected construction.
The government said decisions concerning the project’s future direction, scope and management structure would be announced after the audit has been completed.
Until then, it remains unclear whether the project will proceed in its original form, be redesigned or be assigned a different purpose.
The Presidency is expected to provide further details on the audit process and the future management of the National Cathedral site in due course.
