Halloween continues to divide opinion among Christians, with some avoiding the occasion entirely and others taking part in selected activities. Because the Bible does not directly address the modern celebration, believers draw on broader scriptural teachings about conscience, worship and conduct when deciding how to respond.
For Christians who abstain, concerns often center on imagery associated with witchcraft, evil spirits and death. They believe participation could conflict with their commitment to reject practices that dishonor God, frequently referring to Ephesians 5:11 and its warning against involvement in the works of darkness.
Some families instead attend church-organised harvest celebrations or other gatherings that offer children opportunities to enjoy games, costumes and treats within boundaries consistent with their beliefs. However, Christians also differ over whether these alternatives sufficiently distinguish themselves from Halloween.
Other believers separate ordinary seasonal activities from practices they consider spiritually objectionable. They may allow children to wear non-frightening costumes, decorate pumpkins or collect sweets while avoiding occult themes and entertainment they find disturbing.
For these Christians, the emphasis is on the nature of the activity and the intention behind it. They understand 1 Corinthians 10:31, which calls believers to honor God in everything they do, as a guide to thoughtful participation and neighbor hospitality.
Passages such as Romans 14 and 1 Corinthians 8 often shape the discussion. Although neither addresses Halloween specifically, both explore questions of conscience and responsibility towards fellow believers. Christians applying these teachings are encouraged to examine their convictions carefully, avoid pressuring others to act against their conscience and treat differing views with respect.
Christians should not participate in Halloween because it is associated with evil and darkness, which stand in opposition to the light of God. Just as light and darkness cannot coexist, Christians should be careful not to take part in anything that glorifies evil or promotes demonic practices. As followers of Christ, we are called to walk in the light, reject darkness, and remain separate from anything that goes against God’s Word. Our lives should reflect holiness, righteousness, and the truth of Jesus Christ. We cannot claim to walk in the light of Christ while willingly embracing what we believe represents darkness.
