The Chosen production team did not shy away from portraying the harsh reality of the event “Jesus”

Actor Jonathan Roumie has opened up about the intense experience of filming the crucifixion scenes for Season 6 of The Chosen, saying the production did not shy away from portraying the harsh reality of the event.

Speaking during a red carpet interview at Chosen Con, Roumie described the crucifixion sequence as the most brutal work he has ever done professionally. He explained that the creators were committed to delivering a visceral and honest depiction of Christ’s sacrifice, rather than softening the moment for audiences.

The role took a serious physical and emotional toll on the actor. Roumie revealed that he suffered a torn acromioclavicular (AC) joint during filming, an injury that was made worse while carrying the cross in multiple takes. In preparation for the scenes, he also underwent significant physical changes, including intense fasting and dieting, to appear more frail and thinner while on the cross.

Beyond the physical strain, Roumie acknowledged the emotional impact of reenacting the scourging and crucifixion. He said he experienced symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress, explaining that the brain can struggle to separate deeply immersive reenactments from real-life trauma when the scenes are that intense.

Despite the hardship, Roumie said he viewed the experience as a spiritual sacrifice. He shared that he had prayed for the opportunity to experience even a fraction of what Christ endured, seeing his physical and emotional suffering during filming as a personal offering in service to God.

Chosen Con, where Roumie made the remarks, is a fan convention celebrating The Chosen, bringing together cast members, creators, and supporters for premieres, interviews, and events traditionally held on what the show calls its “teal carpet.”
