Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called on Ghana’s Christian community and religious leaders to take a more active role in fighting corruption and addressing moral challenges affecting the nation.
She made the call on Friday, July 17, 2026, during the opening ceremony of the 10th General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG) held at the Dela Cathedral in Ho, Volta Region.
Speaking on the theme of the assembly, “Seizing the Opportunities for Genuine Renewal,” the Vice President stressed that the church must not remain silent in the face of national challenges.
Church Must Be a Voice Against Corruption
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged pastors, church leaders, and members of congregations to actively speak against corruption and practices that weaken society.
She argued that religious institutions have a responsibility to promote integrity, accountability, and ethical leadership, rather than serving as passive observers.
According to her, silence when corruption and social injustices persist risks damaging the moral foundation of the country.
Warning Against Selective Silence
The Vice President cautioned religious leaders against taking positions only when issues involve political opponents or particular administrations.
She emphasized that the church must maintain consistency in defending moral values, regardless of which political party is in power.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described religious institutions as the conscience of society and encouraged them to uphold truth, fairness, and accountability at all times.
Faith Community’s Role in National Renewal
The Vice President stated that Ghana’s recovery and transformation require more than economic reforms alone, emphasizing the need for a broader moral and ethical renewal.
She noted that the church is uniquely positioned to influence positive change through its teachings, community work, and ability to shape values among citizens.
According to her, a collective commitment to honesty and responsible citizenship is essential to overcoming the country’s challenges.
EPCG Assembly Marks Leadership Milestone
The 10th General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, also marked an important moment for the denomination’s leadership.
During the gathering, delegates approved the extension of the tenure of Rt. Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. (Rtd) Bliss Divine Agbeko as Moderator of the General Assembly for another four-year term.
The decision is expected to provide leadership continuity as the church continues implementing its upcoming spiritual, social, and community development initiatives.
Religious Leaders Encouraged to Support National Progress
The Vice President’s address highlighted the growing expectation for faith-based organizations to contribute to Ghana’s development beyond spiritual responsibilities.
She encouraged the Christian community to use its influence to promote accountability, unity, and values that support national progress.
