Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama has defended the central bank’s recruitment drive, explaining that between 50 and 60 employees retire annually and must be replaced to sustain its operations.

Speaking at the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee press conference in Accra on September 24, 2026, Dr. Asiama said recruitment also reflected the need for expertise in emerging areas of financial oversight.

He identified virtual assets, data analytics, artificial intelligence and cyber monitoring as areas requiring additional personnel. According to the Governor, rapid changes in financial technology have made it necessary for the bank to strengthen its technical capabilities.

Dr. Asiama also explained that attracting and retaining specialists requires competitive remuneration, particularly when employees can secure alternative opportunities after receiving training.

His comments come amid scrutiny of the bank’s personnel expenditure. Graphic Business reported that personnel costs increased from GH¢1.62 billion in 2022 to GH¢3.29 billion in 2025, while reported staff strength rose from 2,206 to 2,691.

In 2025, the bank recruited 395 employees and recorded 72 departures, resulting in a net workforce increase of 323. The report noted that staff growth accounted for only part of the rise in personnel costs, which include more than salaries alone.

The Governor said recruitment was expected to slow, with future hiring increasingly aligned with annual retirements. He maintained that workforce decisions must reflect the skills the central bank needs to fulfil its responsibilities as the financial sector evolves.
