Egypt is seeking greater investment from Qatar in its energy and tourism industries as it works to expand private enterprise and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
Egyptian Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk discussed the investment drive with his Qatari counterpart, Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, during talks held alongside Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank meetings in Doha.
Kouchouk said partnerships between Egyptian and Qatari businesses could support sustainable growth and create employment. The discussions also explored cooperation between the two finance ministries, particularly the exchange of expertise in fiscal and tax policy.
Speaking separately at a session on development financing, the Egyptian minister highlighted public-private partnerships as a means of attracting investment into infrastructure, including renewable energy.
He said cleaner energy could strengthen the competitiveness of Egyptian exports, while improvements to roads, ports, logistics and customs procedures would support the country’s ambitions to become a regional trading hub.
Kouchouk also called for stronger backing from multilateral development banks through financing instruments and guarantees that encourage private investors. He said economic reforms were being pursued alongside social protection measures for vulnerable groups.
