GH¢2 diesel price relief as fuel costs climb

Ghana President

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to absorb GH¢2 on every litre of diesel, in a move aimed at cushioning consumers against the impact of recent fuel price increases.

The intervention, which takes effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, is expected to provide some relief to commercial transport operators, businesses and other users of diesel who have been facing rising operational costs.

The directive follows a series of fuel price increases by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), driven largely by rising international crude oil prices and developments in the global refined petroleum market.

Diesel has recorded some of the steepest increases in recent weeks, sparking concerns over the potential impact on transport fares, the prices of goods and services, and overall inflation.

Government says the GH¢2 absorption forms part of broader measures to protect consumers from the effects of fluctuations in global energy prices while supporting ongoing economic recovery efforts.

The government has also assured the public that it will continue to monitor developments in the international oil market and consider further interventions where necessary to cushion consumers and promote stability in domestic fuel prices.
