Ghana has reached a significant milestone in its agricultural development with the establishment of the country’s first large-scale hybrid shea plantation demonstration farm at Futa in the Tamale South Constituency.
The 30-acre farm, located within the Tamale Metropolis, is intended to introduce farmers to modern methods of cultivating shea trees and reduce the country’s reliance on naturally growing varieties.
Shea trees have traditionally grown in the wild across northern Ghana and often take several years to reach maturity. The new demonstration farm will use hybrid and grafted seedlings to shorten the trees’ gestation period, increase productivity and improve the quality and quantity of shea nuts harvested.
The facility will also serve as a training and educational center where local farmers can learn efficient plantation management, seedling development and other improved agricultural practices.
The initiative forms part of the government’s wider plan to modernize the shea industry and increase its economic value to about $640 million. It is also expected to encourage the development of structured plantations and strengthen local processing and export opportunities.
Senior government officials led the planting exercise, underscoring the growing importance of the shea value chain to Ghana’s economy and rural development agenda.
The transition from harvesting wild shea nuts to organised plantation farming is expected to create jobs and provide more reliable incomes for farmers and rural women involved in processing and trading shea products.
Shea, commonly described as “women’s gold,” supports the livelihoods of thousands of women across northern Ghana. Expanding its cultivation could guarantee a more sustainable supply of raw materials while helping local producers benefit from rising international demand for shea butter in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.
