The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced plans to expand daily toll and market fee collection to cover businesses operating at night and on weekends, effective October 2026.
The move seeks to widen the Assembly’s revenue base by bringing commercial activities conducted outside regular daytime collection hours into its revenue collection system.
KMA’s Principal Budget Analyst, Mr. Eric Nunoo, outlined the plans during the Assembly’s annual fee-fixing resolution consultative meeting. The exercise provides an opportunity to review existing charges and consider proposed rates for the 2027 fiscal year.
Under the expanded arrangement, night traders, weekend business operators and relevant market and transport terminal users will fall within the collection schedule. The Assembly also aims to strengthen monitoring of commercial activities across Kumasi’s busy trading centers.
Mr. Nunoo explained that fee adjustments must remain within the upper and lower limits prescribed by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs. Any increases are expected to be introduced gradually to ease the financial impact on ratepayers and small businesses.
The extension forms part of KMA’s broader efforts to improve internally generated revenue and strengthen the administration of local fees.
It also follows the Assembly’s drive to digitalize revenue collection, including the transition of Business Operating Permits and daily toll payments to a cashless platform.
