Power Cuts Threaten Upper Dixcove’s Fishing Industry, Chief Fisherman Warns

Nana Kwaku Dadzie, the Chief Fisherman of Upper Dixcove

The Chief Fisherman of Upper Dixcove in the Western Region, Nana Kwaku Dadzie, has called for urgent action to address recurring electricity disruptions, warning that the outages are undermining the community’s fishing industry.

He said the unstable power supply, commonly referred to as “dumsor”, was disrupting cold storage facilities used to preserve fish for sale, putting the livelihoods of fishers and traders at risk.

Nana Dadzie raised the concerns during a workshop organised by Friends of the Nation for fishing communities in Upper and Lower Dixcove. The engagement formed part of the organization’s “Protecting Our Zone, Securing Our Future” project and focused on developments in the marine sector.

Describing fishing as the foundation of the local economy, he warned that continued power interruptions could deepen financial hardship across the community. He appealed to the Ministry of Energy, the Electricity Company of Ghana and the government to resolve the recurring problem.

Fishers and fishmongers who spoke to the Ghana News Agency echoed his concerns, saying the disruptions were affecting their businesses and household finances. Some said the resulting hardship had made it difficult to support children attending secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
