Student Protesters Block Louvre Entrance, Forcing Museum Closure

Student protesters have forced the closure of Paris' Louvre Museum

Student protesters forced the closure of the Louvre Museum in Paris on Monday, October 19, 2026, after blocking its glass pyramid entrance in a demonstration over education funding and wider economic grievances.

The blockade prevented the museum from opening at its scheduled time of 9:00 a.m., disrupting visits to one of France’s leading cultural attractions. Students from the École du Louvre and the National School of Fine Arts were among those involved.

The action followed a month of student mobilisation against budget cuts, teacher shortages and overcrowded classrooms. Demonstrators are calling for increased public investment to improve school infrastructure and ease pressure on students and teaching staff.

The protest also came after a weekend of anti-government demonstrations over the cost of living, during which more than 2,400 people were reportedly arrested across France.

At the museum entrance, protesters condemned what they described as police repression during Saturday’s rallies, linking their education demands to broader concerns about the government’s response to public dissent.

Leaflets distributed to visitors explained the decision to target a prominent cultural institution. Protesters described disruption to public services and the cultural economy as a last resort in their efforts to secure government concessions.

The Louvre confirmed its closure and said reservations for October 19 would be automatically refunded. No damage to the museum was reported.

The disruption comes during an important week for the French capital’s arts sector, with preparations underway for Art Basel Paris, which draws galleries, collectors and visitors from around the world.

Organisers of the fair have deployed round-the-clock security around exhibition spaces amid concerns about the widening unrest.
