Beninese-French music legend Angélique Kidjo has become the first African musician and first Black African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The five-time Grammy Award winner received the landmark’s 2,854th star during a ceremony held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at 7011 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.
Kidjo’s star was awarded in the Recording category in recognition of her extraordinary artistry, international influence and contributions to global music over a career spanning more than four decades.
Ceremony Celebrates Historic African Achievement
The event was hosted by Variety correspondent Angelique Jackson, with actor Willem Dafoe and Recording Academy Chief Executive Officer Harvey Mason Jr. serving as guest speakers.
Other personalities attending the ceremony reportedly included Beninese-born actor Djimon Hounsou and Nigerian musician Adekunle Gold.
The event celebrated Kidjo’s individual achievements while recognizing the growing influence of African artists on international music and popular culture.
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ron Frierson also proclaimed August 18 as “Angélique Kidjo Day” in Hollywood in honor of the historic achievement.
Kidjo Dedicates Honour to Africa
During her acceptance speech, Kidjo reflected on her childhood in Benin and the remarkable journey that brought her to one of the entertainment industry’s most recognizable landmarks.
She said she would not have believed that such an honor was possible when she was a young girl dreaming of becoming a musician.
Kidjo dedicated the recognition to her family, Benin, generations of African musicians who paved the way and young people hoping to build successful careers of their own.
She also emphasized Africa’s enormous contribution to the development of music worldwide.
“Without us, there’s no music possible on this planet,” she declared, stressing that African rhythms and traditions have shaped numerous global musical genres.
Kidjo previously described the recognition as belonging not only to her but to the entire continent, saying, “It’s not just my star, it’s our star.”
Willem Dafoe Praises Kidjo’s Work Ethic
Willem Dafoe praised Kidjo’s energy, discipline and commitment to humanitarian causes beyond the entertainment industry.
The Hollywood actor described her as “the hardest working woman in show business,” as well as a kind and generous person who has consistently used her voice to promote social change.
Harvey Mason Jr. similarly celebrated Kidjo as a rare artist whose legacy extends beyond awards, record sales and stage performances.
He said her influence could be seen in the people she has inspired, the barriers she has broken and the opportunities she has helped create for younger generations of performers.
Four Decades of Musical Excellence
Kidjo has built an internationally acclaimed career by blending traditional West African sounds with jazz, funk, R&B, pop, Latin music and other influences.
Her energetic performances, multilingual recordings and powerful voice have earned her recognition as one of Africa’s most influential musicians.
Across 18 albums, she has collaborated with numerous international artists and introduced African musical traditions to audiences around the world.
Her latest album, HOPE!!, was released in April 2026. The project features contributions from several celebrated performers and producers, including Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers, Ayra Starr, Quavo, Charlie Wilson and Davido.
Humanitarian Work Remains Central to Her Legacy
Kidjo’s influence also extends beyond music. She has consistently advocated for children, women and disadvantaged communities across Africa.
As a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, she has supported campaigns promoting education, healthcare and the rights of children.
She is also the founder of the Batonga Foundation, an organization focused on equipping girls and young women in Africa with education, leadership skills and opportunities for economic independence.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame recognition honor’s both her musical accomplishments and her role as an advocate for positive social change.
Kidjo’s historic star represents another major milestone for African music as artists from the continent continue to gain wider audiences and reshape the global entertainment industry.
