Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale has urged students of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, to focus on the strategic thinking behind his success rather than imitate the glamorous lifestyle associated with his public image.
The award-winning artiste delivered a keynote address at the UPSA 1000 and Ghana Entrepreneurship Conference, where he exchanged his usual musical performance for a lecture on entrepreneurship, branding and business strategy.
Addressing students and other participants, Shatta Wale reflected on his journey through Ghana’s entertainment industry and the persistence, creativity and calculated decisions that helped him develop his career.
“Don’t copy my lifestyle; copy my thinking,” he told the gathering, encouraging young people to look beyond his luxury possessions and the visible rewards of fame.
According to him, the most important lessons from his career are found in the ideas, resilience and determination that enabled him to overcome setbacks and build a commercially successful brand.
Shatta Wale also cautioned students against making quick money the central objective of their ambitions. He argued that sustainable financial success is more likely to follow individuals who create value, maintain a clear vision and work consistently toward their goals.
He further advised young entrepreneurs to remain versatile and prepared to evolve as technology, consumer behavior and global business conditions continue to change. He said adaptability was essential for anyone seeking to remain competitive and relevant.
A major part of his address focused on strategic branding and the role of digital platforms in developing profitable ventures. The musician encouraged students to use social media and other online tools to promote their ideas, connect with audiences and transform raw talent into sustainable businesses.
He explained that personal branding involves more than gaining popularity, stressing the need for consistency, a clear identity and a proper understanding of one’s target audience.
Shatta Wale attended the conference at the invitation of the UPSA Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor.
The dancehall artiste also surprised the audience by pledging to perform without charge at UPSA’s student week celebrations for the next two years. The announcement received an enthusiastic response from students and representatives of the Students’ Representative Council.
His appearance at the conference highlighted the growing connection between entertainment and entrepreneurship, with successful creatives increasingly sharing practical lessons on brand development, marketing and commercial sustainability.
