Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has shared his admiration for President John Dramani Mahama’s personal introduction at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, drawing attention to the Ghanaian leader’s tribute to his family and heritage.
The musician posted a video of the address on his Instagram Story, amplifying a moment in which Mahama looked beyond his presidential title to acknowledge the people and community that shaped his life.
Addressing world leaders, Mahama reflected on how high office can overshadow the personal histories of those who hold it. He stressed that leaders arrive on the international stage carrying the experiences and legacies of their communities.
He then offered a more personal introduction, recounting his origins in Damongo, now the capital of Ghana’s Savannah Region.
Mahama identified himself as the son of the late Emmanuel Adama Mahama of Ble and Abiba Naba of Bunu, paying homage to his parents and earlier generations.
“I belong to them. And I belong to the foremothers and the forefathers,” he said.
The passage brought a personal dimension to the diplomatic address, placing family, ancestry and belonging alongside the responsibilities of national leadership.
Davido’s decision to share the clip extended its reach to his entertainment audience, adding to online discussion about the speech.
Social media reactions highlighted Mahama’s emphasis on cultural identity and the way his introduction connected the authority of public office with the people and places behind it.
