British-Nigerian businessman and social media personality Igho “Tiny” Ubiribo, an associate of Nigerian music star Davido, died after undergoing a cosmetic penile-filler procedure in Bangkok, Thailand, according to evidence presented at a London coroner’s inquest.
Ubiribo, 43, reportedly underwent the procedure on March 5 while visiting Bangkok with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen. The treatment involved injections of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine.
Shortly after the procedure, Ubiribo complained of chest pain and collapsed twice while receiving a massage. He was transported to Sukhumvit Hospital, where doctors recommended a CT scan before he lost consciousness.
Medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him, but he died in the early hours of March 6.
A post-mortem examination conducted in the United Kingdom found material in his lungs consistent with the hyaluronic acid used during the treatment. Assistant Coroner Jean Harkin recorded his cause of death as a pulmonary embolism linked to the cosmetic procedure.
The clinic where the procedure was performed has not been publicly identified.
News of the inquest findings prompted renewed discussion about the risks associated with cosmetic procedures performed overseas and the importance of confirming a clinic’s accreditation, practitioners’ qualifications and emergency-care arrangements.
Ubiribo, who had a substantial following on Instagram, was widely known within Nigerian entertainment and social circles. His death prompted tributes from friends and associates.
He was subsequently laid to rest in London.
Earlier claims that infection, anesthetic toxicity and multi-organ failure contributed to his death have not been established by the available inquest reporting. Reports instead identify a procedure-related pulmonary embolism as the official cause.
